There’s no doubt that Seve changed my life and, without dwelling on it too much, I was incredibly upset when I learnt of his death. It’s because of Seve that I started the challenge and he has shaped so many parts of my life in so many ways. Is that entirely healthy – I’m not sure – but I think it’s impossible not to be positively impacted by the Seve Ballesteros’ of this world.

We had, rather optimistically I suppose, even hoped he might recover enough to be able to make a cameo appearance at the end of the film of Dream On.

His was an incredibly full life though and rather than dwelling endlessly on how sad it is to lose him and how tragically young he was I want to focus on the top seven tips that I learnt from Seve.

There’s no doubt that Masters night was a very unsettling experience for those of us who have watched Rory grow up and felt his time had come. All those hours that I spent at the range which he also frequented meant I almost felt paternalistic towards him. When the collapse came, and particularly after the four-putt, I almost decided to just go to bed.

I didn’t though, and I’m glad I didn’t. Charl Schwartzel was a worthy winner (four straight birdies for the last four holes was epic) and there’s no doubt that Rory will have his day. It won’t be easy though and there are a number of mental hurdles that he’ll need to address soon if he’s not to find himself in the same situation again.

If you’re just about to start your season off again (as most of us are in the Northern Hemisphere) Phil Mickelson comes up with a superb piece of advice for how he cranks his game back up.

If I was learning golf or teaching someone from the very beginning this is exactly what I would do. I’m fully aware that there are issues with this and it could arguably be seen as boring but it would be the most effective way to learn and instil a sense that it is all about “getting the ball in the hole” from day one.
